Room fix
Desk in the Bedroom? Where to Put It in a Small Apartment
Short answer: Put the desk on a wall where you can see the door and the bed sits to your side, not straight ahead of you or in your video-call frame. Feng shui traditionally keeps work and rest apart; the practical reason is that one room starts to read as two places instead of one.

The classic rule
Traditional feng shui puts a desk in the commanding position, with a view of the door and no entrance behind you, and many practitioners add that work should not face the bed. The tradition treats the bedroom as a place for rest first. Take that as tradition, not a promise about anything else.
The design reason
When one room does two jobs, what you look at sets which job you are doing. A bed straight in front of the screen pulls your eye every time you look up. There is also a test most layout advice skips: whatever is behind your chair is in every video call. So the bed behind you is on camera, the bed in front of you is in your eyeline, and the bed to your side is in neither.
Researcher Jay Appleton's prospect and refuge idea explains the door half: people settle where they can see out with their back covered.
The 10-minute move
- Sit at the desk, open your laptop camera and note what is in the frame (1 minute).
- List the walls where, sitting at a desk, you could see the door (see desk facing the wall) (1 minute).
- Of those, pick the one where the bed ends up to your left or right (1 minute).
- Clear the desk, unplug, and move it there. Keep about 3 feet between your chair and the bed so you can push back (5 minutes).
- Check the window: beside you is best, not behind the screen (see desk and window glare) (1 minute).
- Repeat the camera test. If the bed is out of frame and out of your eyeline, you are done (1 minute).
Quick check
| Where the bed is from your chair | In your eyeline? | On camera? |
|---|---|---|
| Straight ahead | Yes | No |
| Behind you | No | Yes |
| To your side | No | No |
When this does not apply
If your desk already lives in another room or a closet nook, skip the move and use only the camera test.
Questions people ask
What if the only free wall faces the bed?
Keep the desk there, make the bed before you start work, and angle the chair a little so the bed sits at the edge of your view. The camera test still tells you what callers see.
