Mirror Facing the Front Door? Move It to the Side Wall

Short answer: Put the entry mirror on a side wall, parallel to the way you walk in, instead of straight across from the front door. The classic feng shui rule says a mirror facing the door reflects what comes in straight back out; the design reason is that a side-wall mirror widens a narrow entry instead of doubling the door.

The classic rule

Feng shui practitioners commonly say a mirror should not hang directly opposite the front door, because it sends whatever comes in straight back out. They suggest a side wall instead. Treat that as tradition, not a promise about anything else.

The design reason

A mirror across from the door shows you the door: the hallway, the shoes piled beside it and, on a bright day, a panel of glare. You see the entry twice before you are even inside.

On a side wall the mirror reflects the opposite wall instead, and that is where the space comes from. A reflection appears as far behind the glass as the object is in front of it. In a 3-foot-wide entry, the far wall shows up about 3 feet "behind" the mirror, so the entry reads about 6 feet wide. Same mirror, double the width.

The 10-minute move

  1. Stand outside with the door open and look in. If you see yourself or the doorway in the mirror, it faces the door (1 minute).
  2. Find a side wall within the first 6 feet, ideally beside your drop spot for keys (2 minutes).
  3. If the mirror hangs on a nail, lean it on the floor against the side wall or on a console you own, or use a hook already there. No new holes (4 minutes).
  4. Angle it to catch the nearest lamp or window, not the door (1 minute).
  5. On the wall facing the door, put art or a plant you already own (2 minutes).

Quick check

What the mirror shows from the doorwayWhat to do
The front door or hallwayMove it to a side wall
The opposite side wallKeep it; the entry reads wider
A lamp or windowKeep it; it doubles the light

When this does not apply

If the mirror is built in, such as a mirrored closet door, leave it and keep the floor in front of it clear so it doubles light, not clutter.
