Room fix
Narrow Entryway? Keep the Route Before Adding Storage
Short answer: In a narrow entry, clear the door swing first and move loose storage out of the walking route. Traditional feng shui favors an open entrance; the practical test is whether you can open the door and carry a bag through without turning sideways.

PLAN 12 · Narrow entry · 4' x 12'
The classic rule
Traditional feng shui gives the entrance special attention and favors an unobstructed arrival. That is a cultural design preference; it does not predict what will happen to the people who live there.
The design reason
A narrow hall loses usable width quickly. In the example, a 4-foot-wide hall minus a 1-foot-deep rack leaves a 3-foot strip. That simple subtraction is not an accessibility assessment: door hardware, turning space and the rest of your route still matter.
The 10-minute move
- Open the front door fully before moving anything. Keep its entire swing and the exit route clear.
- Lift loose shoes, bags and delivery boxes out of the hall. Do not shift them into a stairwell or shared corridor.
- Measure the narrowest clear width, including handles, shoes and anything projecting from storage. Aim to preserve the 3-foot strip shown if your space allows; do not narrow an already tighter route to copy the diagram.
- The plan moves a low, freestanding rack toward the far end and uses a shallower footprint. Use an existing shallow piece only if it fits and is stable. If you do not own one, remove the bulky piece and store items in another room instead of buying or drilling.
- Walk through with your usual bag and check the door again. A floor mat must lie flat and stay out of the swing.
What the drawing means
The dashed block is the old 18-inch-deep storage. The orange block is a 12-inch-deep alternative beyond the door swing; it is a different footprint, not the same rack magically shrinking. All dimensions are illustrative. Keep building exits and required access clear regardless of the traditional rule.
