Room fix
How Wide Should a Walking Path Be in a Small Apartment?
Short answer: Aim for a clear path about 36 inches (3 feet) wide from the front door to the window and to your main seat. That is the minimum clear width the US ADA standards use for an accessible route, and in a small apartment it is the difference between walking through a room and squeezing past it.

The classic rule
Feng shui talks about letting movement flow through a home instead of getting stuck at corners and furniture. Strip away the tradition and it is what designers call traffic flow: the routes you walk every day should be clear and direct.
The design reason
Thirty-six inches is a useful target because it is the minimum clear width for a walking route in the 2010 ADA Standards (section 403.5.1). It is enough for one adult to walk without turning sideways or carrying a laundry basket at an angle. A home does not have to meet ADA rules, but the number is a good, measurable stand-in for "feels easy to walk through".
The 10-minute move
- Pick your three daily routes: front door to main seat, main seat to kitchen, bed to bathroom.
- Walk each one with a tape measure, or count: a typical adult stride is roughly 2.5 feet.
- Find the narrowest pinch on each route. It is usually a chair, a side table or the corner of a sofa.
- Move the one piece that causes the pinch. Push it against a wall, float it to the other side of the route, or swap it with a smaller piece you already own.
- Walk the route again carrying something bulky. If you do not turn sideways, it works.
Quick check
| Width of the path | How it feels |
|---|---|
| Under 24 inches | You turn sideways or bump furniture |
| About 30 inches | Passable for one person |
| About 36 inches | Easy, even carrying a basket |
