No Foyer? Clear the First 3 Feet Inside Your Door
Short answer: Keep the arc your front door swings through completely clear, and give shoes and bags one spot just past it, so the first 3 feet inside stay open. Feng shui traditionally treats the entrance as the mouth of the home; the design reason is that the door swing is where clutter collects and gets in the way first.

The classic rule
Traditional feng shui calls the front door the mouth of the home and asks for an entrance that is clear, bright and easy to walk through. Treat it as tradition: a rule about how arriving feels, not a promise about anything else.
A second tradition is useful here. The Japanese genkan is a small, clearly marked zone just inside the door where shoes come off and stay. It is a good model for a US apartment with no foyer: one zone, one job.
The design reason
Two measurements decide whether an entry works:
- The door swing. A standard apartment front door is about 36 inches wide, so it sweeps a quarter circle about 3 feet deep into the room. Anything inside that arc gets hit, kicked or stepped over.
- The landing spot. You need one place to stop, put down a bag and step out of shoes. US accessibility standards use a 60-inch circle as the space to turn around; most apartment entries do not have it, which is why the spot just past the swing matters.
The 10-minute move
- Open the door all the way and trace its arc on the floor with your foot. Everything inside the arc moves out (3 minutes).
- Pick one shoe spot on the hinge side, outside the swing: a tray, a mat or a low shelf you already own (2 minutes).
- Pick one drop spot for keys and bag at hand height, within one step of the door (2 minutes).
- Move extra coats to an existing hook or the nearest closet. No new hooks (2 minutes).
- Walk in carrying groceries. If you do not step over anything in the first 3 feet, it works (1 minute).
Quick check
| Zone | Job | Keep in it |
|---|---|---|
| The door swing (about 3 ft) | Opening the door | Nothing |
| Hinge side, past the swing | Shoes off | One tray or mat |
| One step in | Drop keys and bag | One surface or hook |
When this does not apply
If your door opens straight into the living room with no wall beside it, the "entry" is the first 3 feet of that room; apply the same steps there.
