Room fix
New Year Room Reset: One Room, Five No-Purchase Moves
Short answer: Reset one room with five no-purchase moves: clear the landing, check desk and bed placement, walk the path, then finish with one clear surface and a lamp.

Start now: choose one room and one snag
Choose the room you use most. Name one thing that gets in your way: a bag at the door, a chair in the route or a table you cannot use. Put that item away first. You have a useful result before planning the rest. No shopping list, special objects or whole-home overhaul needed.
This adapts the Renter Layout Kit's five-move New Year routine to one room. Use only the steps that fit; a living room does not need a bed or desk. Start with ten minutes and stop after one useful change. Larger furniture moves can wait for help.
The studio plan above is an existing example of moving a small table out of a walking route. It illustrates the path check, not a required layout for your room.
1. Clear the landing
Clear the door swing and the first three feet inside the room. Give coats, shoes and bags an existing home outside that space. Open the door fully to check your work. See the small-entryway guide if this is your sticking point.
2. Put the door in view at the desk, if there is one
Sit at the desk. If you want the door in view, test turning the desk with a paper sketch before moving it. Keep the window to the side of the screen where possible and leave room to pull the chair back. Skip the move if cords, fixed fittings or the lease prevent it. The desk placement guide shows the existing example.
3. Walk the route
Walk from the door to the window and the main seat. Move one small piece that pinches the route, then measure the narrowest point, including furniture corners. Aim for about 36 inches where the room permits; check again with chairs pulled out. The walking-path guide explains the existing reference. Keep doors, heaters and vents unobstructed.
4. Review the bed position, if there is a bed
The classic feng shui preference is a solid wall behind the headboard and a view of the door without lying directly in its line. Treat that as tradition, not a promised outcome. Sketch an alternative only if you can keep the door swing and bedside route clear. If the room has only one workable layout, keep it. See the bed-and-door guide before considering a move; get help with heavy furniture.
5. Finish with one clear surface and one lamp
Clear one tabletop you actually use. Move an existing lamp toward a dark corner only if its cord stays safely outside the route. Sit down and check for glare before calling it finished. Leave the rest of the room for another day.
Keep the change that earned its place
Repeat the same task that felt awkward at the start: enter with a bag, pull out the chair or set down a cup. Is it easier now? Write one sentence: “The one move I am keeping is ___ because ___.” If the change makes the route worse, put it back. A new calendar does not require a new room.
