Start now: clear the door swing

Set a 10-minute timer. Move the coat pile out of the door swing and choose one spot for bags. You have already started. Count guests and seats before you move anything else. Use what you own; skip anything too heavy to move safely.

The entryway plan above is an existing narrow-entry example: moving the rack opens the route. Your furniture can differ. Follow the order below rather than trying to copy the room.

0–2 minutes: door and coats

Open the door fully. Clear the first three feet inside it and choose one chair or existing hook for coats and bags. Keep that spot outside the walking route. Turn on the lamp near the door if you have one.

2–4 minutes: path first

Walk from the door to the main seats and then to the bathroom. Lift loose cords, baskets and shoes out of the route. Aim for about 36 inches of clear width where the room allows, checking the narrowest furniture corner as well as the straight section. Use the existing walking-path guide for the measurement. Walk it again; keep doors and exits clear.

4–6 minutes: seats second

Count one stable seat per guest. Borrow dining chairs, an ottoman or a bench you already have. Turn seats toward one another in a loose circle instead of all toward the TV. Keep every seat outside the route, including when someone is sitting in it. If there is no room, use a smaller group rather than squeezing in an extra chair.

6–8 minutes: surfaces and light

Clear the table you will eat or snack at and one nearby surface for drinks. Use an existing lamp near the table or a dark corner, with its cord tucked safely away from the route. Sit in the guest seat: if the bulb shines into your eyes, turn the shade or use another existing light. No new lamps needed.

8–10 minutes: the last walk-through

For an overnight guest, clear a landing spot beside the bed or sofa, put a lamp within reach and a chair or stool nearby for a bag. Otherwise, use these two minutes to walk the route with a tray, sit in each seat and check the light. Move only the small item that still gets in the way.

Done looks like this: the door opens fully, the bathroom route stays clear, everyone has a seat, drinks have a landing spot and you can reach the light. Stop the timer. The room does not need to look perfect.

Keep the useful order

Path → seats → light. Save that three-word reminder for the next visit. For a quieter reset after the guests leave, use the New Year room reset.
