Room fix
Where to Put the Couch in a Small Living Room
Short answer: Put the couch against a wall if the walking path would otherwise squeeze behind it, and float it only when you can leave about 36 inches of path behind it. Feng shui traditionally wants something solid behind the main seat; designers float a couch to turn part of a room into a living zone.

The classic rule
In traditional feng shui, the main seat in a room should have support behind it: a solid wall, or if the sofa floats, something low and solid behind its back. Treat that as tradition. It is a rule about how a seat feels to sit in, not a promise about anything else.
The design reason
The real deciding factor is your walking path. Floating a couch makes a living zone and stops the room from feeling like a hallway, but only if people can still walk past it. That takes floor depth, and it adds up fast:
- A typical sofa is about 36 inches deep.
- A comfortable walking path behind it is about 36 inches (the clear width US accessibility standards use for a route).
- The gap to the coffee table is about 18 inches.
That is roughly 7.5 feet of floor before the coffee table even starts. If the room cannot spare it, the couch belongs against the wall.
The 10-minute move
- Measure the couch depth and the room depth in the direction the couch faces (2 minutes).
- Walk your daily route from the front door to the kitchen or window and note where it crosses the seating area (1 minute).
- If the path runs between the couch and the TV, move the couch so the path goes around it: against the wall, or floated forward with about 36 inches behind (4 minutes).
- Leave about 18 inches between the couch and the coffee table (1 minute).
- If it floats, put something low you already own behind it, such as a bench, a console or a low bookshelf (1 minute).
- Walk the path carrying a laundry basket. If you do not turn sideways, it works (1 minute).
Quick check
| Room depth (direction the couch faces) | Best bet |
|---|---|
| Under about 10 feet | Couch against the wall |
| About 10 to 13 feet | Wall, or a small gap of 16 to 24 inches if no one walks behind |
| Over 13 feet or open plan | Float it with about 36 inches of path behind |
When this does not apply
A sectional or a sleeper sofa changes the numbers, so measure it at its full open size before you decide.
